The Three Trees

Posted by: abelle   in let's 'weigh' awhile

Once there were three trees on a hill in the woods. They were discussing their hopes and dreams.

three trees

The first tree said, ‘Someday I hope to be a treasure chest. I could be filled with gold, silver and precious gems. I could be decorated with intricate carving and everyone would see the beauty.’

Then the second tree said, ‘Someday I will be a mighty ship. I will take kings and queens across the waters and sail to the corners of the world. Everyone will feel safe in me because of the strength of my hull.’

Finally, the third tree said, ‘I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People will see me on top of the hill and look up to my branches, and think of the heavens and God and how close to them I am reaching. I will be the greatest tree of all time and people will always remember me.’

After a few years of praying that their dreams would come true, a group of woodsmen came upon the trees. When one came to the first tree he said, ‘This looks like a strong tree, I think I should be able to sell the wood to a carpenter,’ and he began cutting it down. The tree was happy because he knew that the carpenter would make him into a treasure chest .

At the second tree the woodsman said, ‘This looks like a strong tree.  I should be able to sell it to the shipyard.’  The second tree was happy because he knew he was on his way to becoming a mighty ship.

When the woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened because he knew that if they cut him down his dreams would not come true. One of the woodsmen said, ‘I don’t need anything special from my tree, I’ll take this one,’ and he cut it down.

When the first tree arrived at the carpenters, he was made into a feed box for animals. He was then placed in a barn and filled with hay. This was not at all what he had prayed for.

The second tree was cut and made into a small fishing boat. His dreams of being a mighty ship and carrying kings had come to an end.

The third tree was cut into large pieces, and left alone in the dark.

The years went by and the trees forgot about their dreams.

manger

Then one day, a man and woman came to the barn.  She gave birth and they placed the baby in the hay in the feed box that was made from the first tree.  The man wished that he could have made a crib for the baby, but this manger would have to do.  The tree could feel the importance of this event and knew that it had held the greatest treasure of all time.

Jesus and the apostles in a boat

Years later, a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. One of them was tired and went to sleep. While they were out on the water, a great storm arose and the tree didn’t think it was strong enough to keep the men safe.  The men woke the sleeping man, and He stood and said ‘Peace’ and the storm stopped.  At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings in its boat.

cross on a hill

Finally, someone came and got the third tree.  It was carried through the streets as the people mocked the man who was carrying it. When they came to a stop, the man was nailed to the tree and raised in the air to die at the top of a hill. When Sunday came, the tree came to realize that it was strong enough to stand at the top of the hill and be as close to God as was possible, because Jesus had been crucified on it.

The moral of this story is that when things don’t seem to be going your way, always know that God has a bigger plan for you.  If you place your trust in Him, God will give you great gifts that you can share with others.

Each of the trees got what they wanted, just not in the way they had imagined.

We don’t always know what God’s plans are for us. We just know that His ways are not always our ways, but His ways are always what is best for us.

May your day be blessed and may God cradle you in the palm of His hand.

It’s November already!

Posted by: abelle   in the life of an ordinary earthling

How time flies, huh?  And I’ve been really busy with work that I come home with only a little power left to blog.  Haaayyy!  I love my work, though.  And just last week, my boss congratulated me for the work I was doing.  She said, even it only has been two months, I’m doing pretty well.  And what she said was a nice weekender, especially that it’s a long weekend this week.  Today is holiday here in the Philippines, so I got three days off – Saturday, Sunday and today, Monday!

Holidays season is coming and soon we’ll be turning our calendars to 2010.  Jeff will be 12 on January, I’m turning another year older on February, my husband will be home by March to attend Jeff’s graduation, then he’ll be celebrating his birthday on April with us . . . . .

Oh!  I’ve been looking forward to all the great things the new year will bring us.  In spite of the sad things that happened in our country because of the typhoons, Filipinos always have time to celebrate – small things or big.  We have such strong faith that we see light after the trials.  After all, tomorrow is a new day . . . . .

That’s it for now, people! ;)

Managing our finances

Posted by: abelle   in news from downtown

One month with my current job and I am so positive things about our finances will remain smooth.

I like my work, and despite the heavy load, I always look at the brighter side of it as if I’m wearing my favorite high fashion eyeglasses. Our son will be in high school already next school year, which starts in June, and my husband and I are so excited preparing for it. And aside from taking extra effort to save, I read articles that teach how you can start spending smart and find tips that I know will work for us.

And with the holidays season drawing nearer, it also means holidays spending.  But you don’t have to super spend.  Just decide how much your budget will be and stick to it, like buying $8 Rx eyeglasses! ;)

Of good and bad experiences . . . . .

looking up

Every experience brings out something good.  Good times become good memories; bad times become good lessons.  You never lose; you only gain from life . . . . .

Though knee-deep flood got inside our house while waist-deep out in the street, we did not suffer as bad as they did . . . . .

Many were hurt and others died.  When the typhoon hit Metro Manila and its neighboring provinces, no one was spared – rich or poor – we are all victims . . . . .

Current Status: Proud!

Posted by: abelle   in the life of an ordinary earthling

After a tiring week at work, my Saturday was welcomed with a very good news.

proud mother mug

Today is the distribution of the students’ report cards and I went there this morning to pick up my son’s.  He ranks 2nd in his class, and 18th among grade6 students!  I am so proud of Jeff, and so is his father when I told him the good news a while ago.  Jeff even called up my friend (a former officemate) in her office to tell the good news, and she promised him that she’s coming over tonight.  I think she has something on her mind ;)

Anyway, as promised, Jeff will get a reward for his hard work from me and his father.  He deserves it! ;)

What a Week!

Posted by: abelle   in the life of an ordinary earthling

It was a very busy week for me in my new office.  The work load I had on my first day was like a work load of someone who has been working there for years and knows every single detail of her job.  I went home tired and sleepy.  It has been like that for this whole week.

Jeff and I agreed on the new rules that come with my new schedule, like homework time and play time.  He gets home earlier than I do, so the new rules must be observed without me telling him what to do.  My husband told me that he already misses our morning chats.  We used to chat in the morning before he goes to work and in the evening when he arrives.  Now, we only have the evenings.

Well, that’s it for now.  It’s not even 10pm yet but I already am very sleepy.  Happy weekend!  Long weekend here in the Philippines because it’s holiday on Monday (National Day of Mourning declared by Malacañan due to Mr. Manalo of Iglesia ni Cristo’s burial)

Bye for now, people! ;)

Yesterday morning, right after my interview with the second company (CompanyB) I sent my resume to, I received a call from the first company (CompanyA) asking me to come over to discuss some things.  I’m hired!  Yes, I am back in the corporate world again starting Tuesday next week and will be occupying one of the office chairs the company has there!  What a good news to end my week ;)

Here’s the thing:  I like CompanyB more than CompanyA.  What will you do if CompanyB calls because they are hiring you but you already started working with CompanyA?  Please tell me.  I need your opinion . . . . .

Secrets of a Happy Marriage

Posted by: abelle   in daily dose of laughter

This was sent to me via email.  If you want to see more of this, follow this link ;)

couple

My wife and I have a secret to making a marriage last.

Two times a week, we go to a nice restaurant, have a little wine, some good food and companionship.  She goes Tuesdays, I go Fridays.

We also sleep in separate beds.  Hers is in Sydney and mine is in Melbourne.

I take my wife everywhere, but she keeps finding her way back.

I asked my wife where she wanted to go for our anniversary.  ‘Somewhere I haven’t been in a long time!’ she said.  So I suggested the kitchen.

We always hold hands.  If I let go, she shops.

She has an electric blender, electric toaster and electric bread maker.  Then she said, ‘There are too many gadgets and no place to sit down!’.  So I bought her an electric chair.

Remember . . . . . Marriage is the number one cause of divorce.  Statistically, 100% of all divorces started with marriage.

I married Miss Right.  I just didn’t know her first name was Always.

I haven’t spoken to my wife for 18 months.  I don’t want to interrupt her.

The last fight was my fault.  My wife asked, ‘What’s on the TV?’ . . . . .  I said, ‘Dust!’

In the beginning, God created earth and rested.  Then God created man and rested.  Then God created woman.  Since then, neither God nor man has rested.

Why do men die before their wives?  ‘Cause they want to’. ;)
